Children are not small adults.

Ambulance for Kids is a non-profit organisation specialising in the medical care and evacuation of children under challenging and dangerous conditions.

Since 2023, we have been continuously operating in Ukraine. Our work ranges from paediatric critical care transport and international medical evacuations to evacuating children and families from areas close to the frontline and providing specialised emergency training for children and teenagers.

Our team brings together experienced professionals from emergency medical services, critical care and emergency medicine alongside Ukrainian and international volunteers.


Our mission is simple:


To protect children wherever war, illness or injury puts their lives at risk.

Our Three Pillars

1. Medical Evacuations & Paediatric Critical Care Transport

Critically ill and severely injured children require care specifically adapted to their needs.

Ambulance for Kids organises and carries out medical evacuations within Ukraine as well as cross-border transfers to specialised hospitals throughout Europe.

A mission may begin at a Ukrainian hospital and end many hours – sometimes days – later at a specialised children's hospital in Germany or elsewhere in Europe.

Our work goes far beyond transportation. Together with hospitals, physicians, aid organisations and other partners, we coordinate the medical and logistical chain required to safely transfer a child.

Our specially equipped paediatric critical care ambulance allows us to provide intensive medical care even during long-distance transports.

Because with us, children are not the exception – they are the reason we exist.
2. Evacuations from Frontline Areas

For many children in Ukraine, war is not something they see on the news.

It is part of everyday life.

Families continue to live only a few kilometres from the frontline, where air attacks, artillery, drones and damaged infrastructure are a constant threat.

Ambulance for Kids supports the evacuation of children and families from particularly dangerous areas close to the frontline and brings them to safer regions.

We pay particular attention to those for whom evacuation can be especially difficult: children with disabilities, foster and adoptive families, orphans and other particularly vulnerable children and families.

These missions require experience, careful planning, appropriate vehicles and continuous assessment of the security situation.

We do not enter active combat zones without control or planning. Every mission is coordinated with Ukrainian partners and carried out only when the security situation allows us to do so responsibly.

Sometimes medical aid does not mean treating a child. Sometimes it means getting that child out of danger in time.
3. Stop the Bleeding for Kids

When professional help cannot arrive in time, knowledge can save a life.

What can a child do when a friend, sibling or parent is severely bleeding after an attack – and emergency services cannot reach them?

This reality led us to create “Stop the Bleeding for Kids.”

Our courses teach children and teenagers, in an age-appropriate and practical way, how to recognise life-threatening bleeding and respond using simple but effective emergency measures.

 

Participants learn and practise:

  • recognising life-threatening bleeding
  • correct application of a tourniquet
  • pressure dressings and wound packing
  • the use of chest seals
  • preventing hypothermia
  • basic safety behaviour related to mines and explosive hazards

The goal is not to turn children into paramedics.

It is to give them practical skills that, under the realities of war, may make the difference between life and death.

The courses are hands-on. Children train with realistic medical training equipment and, depending on the project and available funding, receive emergency equipment that they can keep for use in a real emergency.

A tourniquet can only help if it is available.
And it can only save a life if someone knows how to use it.

Introduction
The start of the Ukraine crisis on February 24, 2022, profoundly affected me and countless others. After accompanying a medical transport of equipment for children in Ukraine, the head of Deutsche Flugambulanz gGmbH and I founded the “Airbridge Ukraine” project. Our mission: provide urgent emergency medical aid and intensive help for children. During this period, I searched tirelessly for donations to support the costs of evacuations and safe medical transport. With incredible support from Bild hilft e.V. "Ein Herz für Kinder", over 100 children have received specialized intensive care, giving them hope for a healthier future.
Background
After numerous humanitarian aid missions in Ukraine, I realized that, unlike adult services, there was little provision for children's intensive help. Children’s healthcare requires unique emergency medical aid and specialized intensive care, from accurate dosages to specially adapted equipment. Long medical transports across Ukraine’s rough terrain made improvisation dangerous. With my experience in pediatric intensive care, I created "Ambulance for Kids," a service that focuses on children’s emergency needs. Our humanitarian aid includes medical transport, equipment, and care for children, prioritizing their health even amid the Ukraine crisis.

NOTE

Note: The NGO Ambulance for Kids was founded only recently. All pictures which I used here were created by me, but still for the association Paramedic Brandenburg e.V.. I have accompanied all the transports on here myself. The ambulance cars are designed more for “normal” adult transports, I have specialised in children with AFK. From special mattresses to special equipment to a special transport incubator, everything will be available in the future. I want to offer child intensive care transports more safely and to a high Level standard. Improvisation can exist in exceptional cases, but it must not be the rule…
